The University of Hertfordshire aims to give their students the best possible facilities and experience during their studies. In fact, they spend more on their student facilities than any other university in the UK. Facilities include Learning Resource Centres, 460 seat auditorium, a £16 million Sports Village, The Key Centre (a multi-faith and multi-cultural centre).
The Students' Union is the hub of university life, with bars and regular live music and events. There are over 100 clubs and societies students can join, the Students' Union also provides support and funding to allow students to set up their own club.
Web Development Brief
A complete redesign of the website was needed, this included a restructure of all content, addition of new content and sections, editorial control over everything (Content Management), a new start in brand awareness, a portal for students to find pretty much everything they want and an outlet for student services.
Making The Web Development Project Successful
The process began with re-branding their website whilst retaining the UHSU (University of Hertfordshire Student Union) feel, ensuring the website hung off their current brand. A strong, consistent style was provided, within which uploaded imagery and content would fit visually.
By using Expression Engine (CMS) to develop the website, we were able to give complete editorial control, allowing content to be changed with ease by administrators.
The website was built with accessibility and usability in mind. All the pages on the new website consist of different types of content e.g text, imagery, videos, as this could have posed a problem for download speeds. To overcome this problem the website was optimised so that it could be downloaded quickly by visitors, whilst still taking into account the varied content of each page.
